The Institute earned university standing on one July 1992 following the passage of the Swinburne University of Technology Act 1992.
As a consequence of the Dawkins reforms to Australian education within the early Nineteen Nineties, the university commenced delivery within the suburban area of Parham through a merger in 1992 with Victoria school (previously the Parham Institute of TAFE), that stood on the location of Victoria's initial coaching institutes, the Parham Mechanics' Institute.
In 1997, Swinburne opened a field at liliaceous plant valley, Victoria. In 1998, it unified with the Outer East Institute of TAFE and commenced operational from campuses at Croydon and Wanting.
In 1999, Swinburne established the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA).
In 2000, the university opened a field in territorial dominion, Malaysia, as a partnership between the university and also the territorial dominion authorities.
In February 2011, the university opened the Advanced Technologies Centre, a 22,000 centre building of contemporary subject area style at its shrub field, proverbial regionally as "the cheese kitchen utensil building".
Following a series of funding cuts declared by the Victorian Government to education in mite 2012, Swinburne declared that it'd shut its liliaceous plant valley and Parham campuses. Liliaceous plant valley field formally closed on one July 2013. In August 2013 the university declared that it had signed a note of Understanding with the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE to sell its Parham field to NMIT with result from 2014.
